Country music stars The Mavericks are to headline this year’s Southern Fried Festival in Perth, the city’s annual celebration of American roots music.
The festival, which is being held from 19 to 21 July, will also feature Patty Griffin, Shelby Lynne, Bettye LaVette, Darrell Scott and legendary bass player Danny Thompson.
Raul Malo, the Mavericks frontman, performed at the festival two years ago as a solo artist. Andy Shearer, the festival director, said:
“2013 is a year of returning Southern Fried favourites. Raul Malo’s 2011 gig in Perth Theatre totally rocked and we are delighted to invite him back to the main stage along with souped-up Mavericks bolstered by key members of his own band.
“There was a huge buzz around Darrell Scott’s performances at the Johnny Cash celebration and his solo gig last year with many fans declaring this their Southern Fried highlight. This led us to break with convention and ask Darrell back for an encore just one year down the line, especially as this time he’ll be joined by legendary acoustic bassist Danny Thompson.”
“As ever with Americana, it is all about the song, and, with the breadth and depth of artists we have lined up for Southern Fried 2013, we are looking forward, once again to sharing an unforgettable festival experience.
“As always, there will be the usual smattering of smaller gigs, a bigger and better Sunday Gospel Brunch, support gigs and open mics.”
The Mavericks recently performed at Celtic Connections in Glasgow as part of their UK tour.
The annual festival, now in its sixth year, is organised by Horsecross Arts, the creative organisation behind Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre.
