Veteran actor Timothy Dalton has dubbed ’80s sci-fi flick Flash Gordon “an amazing movie” – and expressed delight that the enjoyably cheesy comic book adaptation continues to have such a loyal following.
The British thesp starred as Prince Barin in the cult classic, alongside Sam J Jones and Brian Blessed.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Dalton recalled how Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright invited him to attend a special event celebrating the film in the United States.
“Flash Gordon is an amazing movie, isn’t it?” he said. “Edgar Wright called me up a year ago, and it was fabulous. The place was packed.
“I had no idea that Flash Gordon was such a huge, huge movie in America.”
Dalton, who played villainous supermarket manager Simon Skinner in Hot Fuzz, has lately become something of a voice-acting specialist for animated movies – including the acclaimed Toy Story 3 and new Disney film TinkerBell and the Secret of the Wings.
Of his time working with Disney Pixar and its studio head John Lasseter, the actor could not be more full of praise.
“I’ve been round the facilities in San Francisco and everything is geared toward excellence.
“I don’t think that man will allow a film to be released until everyone feels they’ve done the best they can.”
