Frank Turner at Leeds University Refectory – review
Frank Turner

Anthony Longstaff delivers his verdict on last week’s full-throttle gig from folk-punk icon Frank Turner.

Frank Turner

Frank Turner is what musicianship is all about: belief, determination and hard work.

No TV show, no competition win, no mobile phone app, no heavily spread YouTube gimmick. If you are reading this as a young, enthusiastic talented songwriter/singer, Frank Turner should be an inspiration to you.

Four albums in with a fifth – Tape Deck Heart – out this week, the multi-genre singer-songwriter flits between folk, folk-rock, hardcore-folk and hardcore rock. Watching him some years ago at Leeds Festival playing a main stage folk-rock set tempted us to see him in the thrash metal tent, playing a completely different set on the same day.

The Eton-educated economics graduate was always going to have a fairly easy ride filling a venue in Leeds, and he just about did that at Leeds Uni’s Refectory. Somewhat overwhelmed by the intense heat inside, it was one sweaty gig – and pretty much how it should be.

There was fine support too from George Frakes and Larry & His Flask, both of whom were definite crowd pleasers.

Turner’s honest songwriting style is consumed by a passion to tell a story and make it the most memorable tale you’ve ever heard. The applause was rapturous when he came on stage and belted straight into crowd favourites Peggy Sang the Blues and Wessex Boy. There were a couple of songs from the new album and a Frank Turner solo was followed by more from his Sleeping Souls backing band.

Packing all the vigour of an artist with five times the experience, this was an amazing show by an amazing artist. Buy his music: you will not be disappointed.
