Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review: Brett Goldstein Contains Scenes of an Adult Nature at Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33), reviewed by Jay Richardson
If DAVID Cameron is serious about tackling children’s exposure to sexual imagery, he could do far worse than see this thoughtful and funny hour about porn.
Brett Goldstein wants to write a show about The Muppets but they’ve an implacable copyright, so instead he’s written this companion piece to his debut hour about running a strip club.
The best observational humour references that which is in plain sight yet rarely discussed – the definition of internet-facilitated porn and the pornification of culture. Why, he wonders, is his brain so wired that when he hears a friend has paid an outrageous amount for a transatlantic flight, does he automatically envisage oral gratification from an air hostess?
A charmer with a degree in feminism and a keen eye for misogyny, Goldstein is only as sex-obsessed as the rest of us. But there’s no ignoring that he’s a man with desires. And the reality of 21st-century lust throws up unprecedented dilemmas that he strains to reconcile but openly shares, defining the struggle as one of instinct versus intellect.
Broadband has messed him up, he claims, so he asks us to invest in his more innocent 22-year-old self, mentally scarred by the strip club experience and moving to New York to take acting classes. In the wake of 9/11, a blackout fostered an end-of-days atmosphere in the metropolis and Goldstein found himself in the middle of his own skin flick. With a sense of anthropological inquiry, disquiet and enormous self-deprecation, he imparts a compelling tale full of titillating but unsettling detail, dramatic and expertly paced. Offered with an ease that belies its clearly profound impact upon him, it also prompts him to suggest some radical solutions for healthier bedroom relations.
Goldstein’s acting career appears to be taking off so let’s hope we’re not deprived of his accomplished stand-up anytime soon.
Until 26 August. Today 9:30pm
