Theatre review: Black Rubix Theatre Presents Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster

Edinburgh Fringe Scotsman review: Black Rubix Theatre Presents Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster at theSpace @ Venue45, reviewed by Sally Stott

Part rowdy pantomime-style satire about a group of journalists, and part play-within-a-play, this light-hearted romp, tenuously connected to the famous newspaper headline, is full of energy that could at times do with being reined in.

What’s happening when and why is less of a priority than the general anarchy, as drinks are slopped about, an audience member dragged up on stage and the cast run from one manic scene to the next.

They’re a likeable bunch, and beneath the deliberately bad acting some have genuine
talent. A stronger script with a tighter kind of comedy would give the performers more to work with.
