Sheffield is a hotbed of culinary talent, with a host of talented chefs cooking up everything from spicy street food to exquisite sushi, as the recent Eat Sheffield awards showed.

Level 5, Students’ Union Building, Durham Road, Sheffield, S10 2TG, 0114 222 6043; website
Inox – another name for stainless steel – is an independently-run concern on the fifth floor of the Sheffield University building. But it is aimed at business people, restaurant-goers and visitors rather than just students. The stylish 100-cover restaurant has its own meeting and function spaces and a balcony with a bird’s eye view of the city.

When the popular restaurant Moran’s in the Dore area of Sheffield closed, there was a collective gasp of dismay. But it has returned as Peppercorn, under the leadership of award-winning chef Charlie Curran and partner Kelly Ware. The couple’s first joint post was as managers of the Samuel Fox Country Inn at Bradwell. Then they spent a year at The Beauchief, winning fine dining honours in last year’s Eat Sheffield Awards. But every good chef longs for a chance to demonstrate his skill and flair in his own restaurant. And that’s what Charlie’s doing now.
Tamper: Sellers Wheel
149 Arundel Street, Sheffield, S1 2NU, 0114 2757970; website
Tamper: Sellers Wheel opened over the summer on Arundel Street; a bigger, more ambitious sister to the original Tamper coffee bar in Westfield Terrace. The building alone makes this place worth a visit. Set in a former silverworks, its most striking feature is a red brick barrel-vaulted ceiling. The menu is brief but distinctive, supplemented by Kai, or Māori, specials. Most of the food is familiar, but with certain key ingredients and flavour combinations.
The Common Room

The influence of American pit grill cooking is making itself known in Sheffield with the appearance of pulled pork on lots of menus. The Common Room sports bar, on the first floor of the Forum next to Devonshire Green, decided to go the whole hog, as it were, and has introduced two huge US smoke pits into the kitchen. The chefs experimented with types of wood and use pellets of hickory and applewood, according to head chef Jason Wilson, a Nether Edge lad.
Fischers at Baslow Hall

The Michelin-starred price tag puts it beyond the reach of many, but Fischer’s is keen to welcome ordinary folk. Hence its current £20.13 lunch menu – and the reason you find us soaking up the sunshine in its glorious gardens as we prepare to try it out for ourselves. The ‘restaurant with rooms’ was founded by chef Max Fischer in 1988, awarded a Michelin star six years later – and has maintained it ever since. In recent years Max has spent more time developing his extensive kitchen garden, leaving the cooking in the skilled hands of head chef Rupert Rowley (pictured).

They don’t serve alcohol but you can bring your own with no corkage charge. A bottle of tap water also arrived promptly, along with poppadoms with mango chutney, a minty spiced yoghurt dip and onion salad. The menu is split up into hot and spicy, specialities and fish, tandoori and biryani dishes, as well as old favourites. Vegetarian options are mainly side dishes that can be upsized for an extra £2… Our bill came to £21.80 but it would have been even cheaper on a ‘two for one’ Thursday or Sunday. Interesting food served up in a friendly atmosphere.
Jack Baker’s Northern Brasserie

Jack Baker’s eponymous brasserie – complete with Jack’s Bar in the basement – opened earlier this year with an open house party that attracted more guests than the old Beauchief had seen in years… Jack spent weeks planning what he should offer. The result is an eclectic mix: brunch, afternoon tea, a daily-changing bar menu (from £5) and a dinner selection of tasting boards, gastro-style starters, classics, slow-braised roasts and grills. The biggest change is that the Beauchief is now very much a family venue.
Inn at Troway

The new-style Wayne Rodgers is eager to please – his menus include private dining, a mix-and-match chippy special (all £10), as well as Sunday lunch, early bird and an eclectic pub selection. Wayne has been head chef of the Inn at Troway, just south of Gleadless, since the middle of last year and he’s buzzing with the challenge… Everything is made onsite, down to the baked beans and the curry sauce; they even brine their own meat for corned beef and pastrami. The Inn at Troway has changed too, since our last visit. The panoramic view over the Moss Valley is still as striking, but there’s a more mellow, lived-in feel about the bar and the airy conservatory with its fresh flowers, racing green walls and lofty rafters.
Fitzwilliam & West

The new F&W menu starts at £2.50 for a fishfinger sandwich. There’s a good brunch selection and a range of sandwiches as well as more elaborate starters and main courses – including The Brendan, a 28oz sirloin named after a customer who has ordered the dish weekly for the last six years. Best of all, everything is half price during food happy hour, from 4pm-7pm each weekday.

Urban Choola is the latest outing from Khalid Wani, who opened Amigos, which quickly became so successful that it had to move to new premises up the road. He kept the old place on and that has now reopened as Urban Choola. Khalid and his business partner and fellow chef Rohan Karichams came up with the concept of bringing the food that people in India love to eat on the street from vendors.

Cupcake queen Amanda Perry is the girl with the golden touch… her expanding empire of shops has earned her a name as the city’s doyenne of sweet delights. Now her foray into the restaurant world is attracting attention too. The man who has joined forces with her to develop Fancie’s cupcake crown into a more meaty reputation is John Parsons – who, until a few months ago, ran award-winning restaurant Kitchen just over the road. Already Fancie has bagged an Eat Sheffield award, and it’s well worth a visit.

Antonio Carluccio, the big, cuddly grandfatherly Italian TV chef, has joined the new, more upmarket restaurants on the first floor of the Oasis at Meadowhall. These are mostly Italian classics such as bruschetta, pasta and bean soup or fried calamari. There’s also seasonal offerings from the specials menu. And if nothing really appeals, the kitchen will make anything you fancy if the ingredients are to hand.
Showroom Cafe Bar
15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield, S1 2BX, 0114 275 7727; website
The fact is that you’d expect dinner at the Showroom to be a burger-and-bun-type affair; a quick snack before the main attraction. But here we have home baked bread, freshly made soup, hand-raised pie, pan-fried fish and sticky toffee sponge. For serious foodies, the feature film can only take second billing.

Ginseng, Sheffield’s first Korean restaurant, has opened at West One Plaza on the site of the short-lived Moo Lala (formerly the almost-as-short-lived Dosanj). The man behind the project is Yang Li, born in China, living in Nottingham, who spotted a gap in the market in Sheffield… Verdict: Not just a meal but a real experience – which will be easier when the instructions arrive.
Amigos Mexican Kitchen

Owner Khalid Wani has noticed the growing popularity of Indian street food in London and decided to bring it to Sheffield. The idea is that favourites from many regions of the country will be available, as he says is the case in any large Indian city… Verdict: Viva Amigos! Glad to see them settling well into their new home.

This place, part of a small chain attempting to establish itself in the north and Scotland, has taken over the restaurant that used to be the Bar and Grill. Apparently a Tropeiro is a Brazilian, semi-nomadic cowboy. It’s quite an airy space with a large dining room and a big salad bar ‘island’ stands in the middle of the tables… Verdict: A very enjoyable flirtation with the meaty cuisine of Brazil.
