Butlers Balti House

44 – 46 Broad Lane, Sheffield, S1 4BT (0114 276 8141, www.butlersbalti.com)

Butlers Balti prides itself with providing some of the finest Asian cuisine in the North of England. Specializing in Balti, they have built a reputation on aromatic but not excessively spicy dishes, traditionally eaten without rice or cutlery.

Review: “Having been fans of Butlers at its previous location, we decided to test some of its best dishes to see if the quality has been sustained. The menu is still very wide-ranging, covering a huge selection of dishes, including plenty of vegetarian meals.” (read more)

Aagrah

1 Leopard Street, Sheffield, S1 2JG (0114 279 5577, www.aagrah.com)

Aagrah offers sophisticated dining in relaxed surroundings and serves award winning Kashmiri cuisine. Diners can see live cooking in the open plan theatre kitchen and see all the dishes being prepared with a live feed which can be viewed on screens in the restaurant. A takeaway menu is also available.

Review: “The Aagrah, laden down with accolades and awards, as its menu is not slow to tell you, offers Hyderabadi, Achar, Tikka Massala, Balti Chilli, Tikka Balti, Makhani, Kashmiri, Biryani, Tawas, Kormas, Bhunas, Dansak, Madras, Dahi, Dopiazi and Vindaloo dishes, and that’s not counting the grills, English dishes and vegetarian options, the special pre-orders and the set menus.” (read more)

Prithi Raj Restaurant

407 Eccelesall Road, Sheffield S11 8PG (0114 2666002, www.prithirajrestaurant.co.uk)

In the heart of Sheffield on Ecclesall Road lies Prithi Raj, which offers an extensive range of dishes, many of which are unique to the restaurant itself. All dishes remain true to the regional cuisines of India and Bangladesh and are freshly prepared with a melding of sophisticated flavours, traditional spices and contemporary twists.

Review: “Prithi Raj has one of those menus which stretch almost from here to the Ganges delta…The lamb was wonderful. The meat was generous and tender but what makes this dish is the sauce, flavoured with Bangladeshi citrus fruit”. (read more)

Zaras

216a Crookes, Sheffield S10 1TH (0114 266 0097, www.zarasrestaurant.com)

Zaras offers the ‘cutting-edge of Indian cuisine’, priding itself on carefully-selected dishes and curries which feature their own unique blend of herbs and spices. After the success of running Ayesha’s on Ecclesall Road,  Zaras’ owners took the high quality of ingredients and placed them inside a luxurious setting to create an Indian restaurant which can boast, between chef and manager, over 40 years of culinary experience.

Review: “You may have read about Zaras’ recently when readers of The Star voted it their favourite restaurant of the year… Five-star food of a quality easily comparable to quite a few middle market modern European restaurants”. (read more)

Cutlers Spice

1 Leighton Road, Sheffield S14 1SP (0114 241 6868, www.cutlersspice.co.uk)

Restaurateur Allam Shah Ullah is a man who knows what he wants – and will go to great lengths to get it. As a teenager he walked in to the Cutler Arms pub in Gleadless and vowed to make it a “cracking restaurant”.

Fifteen years on, that ambition has become a reality, as Cutlers Spice has become one of Sheffield’s premier Bangladeshi restaurants, one with a distinctive and comprehensive menu which focuses on traditional cuisine and Ullah’s intention of “standing out from everybody else”.

Jaflong

182 North Field Road, Sheffield S10 1QU (0114 266 1802, www.jaflong.co.uk)

Named after an idyllic rural area in Bangladesh and established since 1998, Jaflong is a luxuriously-decorated 85-seat capacity restaurant which serves authentic and traditional recipes derived from the abundance of culinary regions of Bangladesh. Its dishes feature only the purest natural herbs and spices to create unique aromatic combinations.

Review: “The standout was the bhaji, a sticky ball bursting with subtle sweetness, but the meats were pretty outstanding too. The chicken in particular offered no resistance to tooth or tongue, melting at the hint of contact, giving away its Bombay spicing without fight or flight”. (read more)
