It has been confirmed that classic movie monster Godzilla will be getting a whole new Hollywood franchise, after the newly-released reboot enjoyed an astonishing opening at the box office.
Taking in almost $200 million worldwide in its first weekend, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla has been met with hordes of enthusiastic cinema-goers and generally positive reviews.
It’s all a far cry from 1998’s much-derided effort. And now it seems the iconic creature will finally be getting another full-blown series of blockbusters.
Quoted in The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros president Dan Fellman said:
“Thomas Tull and his team did an incredible job, and have delivered a new franchise.”
According to insiders, work on the follow-up film is already underway.
It is not known as yet whether Edwards will return to the helm, but given his movie’s success you wouldn’t bet against it.
The British director, who wowed critics with his inventive, low-budget creature feature Monsters back in 2010, united a heavyweight cast including Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche and David Strathairn for the new outing.
