Lewis Schaffer: Success Is Not An Option

Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review (comedy):  Lewis Schaffer: Success is not an option at Heroes @ The Hive (Venue 313). Review by Kate Copstick.

Reviewing Lewis Schaffer is like trying to catch a firefly in a jar. Even if you captured it, if you look too closely, it just doesn’t seem quite as exciting as when it was flying around lighting up the room. Schaffer is almost beyond criticism. You are never going to get the same show twice and even “show” seems to be overstating things.

What I do know is that the audience were roaring with laughter. And that whatever “show” you get will be like no other you see. In what is possibly a fiendishly clever sales pitch, he will pluck a subject from the air, fiddle with it for a moment and then announce “there’ll be a joke about that tomorrow”. And you cannot help but really want to go tomorrow. One year I will go to every one of Schaffer’s shows and document the journey.

It is, as he points out, not a good time to be a Jew. So he is thinking of changing persona. He then does five minutes on that topic and finishes by saying “that stuff was just new … not funny”. But it was. Take a chance on Lewis. You will not regret it.

Until 24 August. Tomorrow 7:45pm, more info
