Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review (comedy): Dan Schreiber: C*ckblocked from Outer Space at Underbelly, Bristo Square (Venue 300). Review by Jay Richardson
Dan Schreiber has been developing his festival debut for a while, actually most of his life it transpires. And now it’s finally here, it’s a cracker.
The erstwhile QI elf and producer of its Radio 4 spin-off, The Museum of Curiosity, which he’s hosting with John Lloyd elsewhere on the Fringe, has conceived the show his illustrious co-host couldn’t quite manage last year – weaving a satisfying, engaging personal narrative through a string of fascinating and obscure facts.
A self-acknowledged geek, albeit witty, confident and charming, you extend him the benefit of the doubt thanks to some lingering insecurity about body hair and the passion with which he owns and shares his geekery, suggesting that his kind truly shall inherit the Earth.
Unfortunately, that may not be enough. Because the other main thread of Schreiber’s hour is his dating exploits. And he finds himself vying for one young lady’s attention with none other than renowned singing astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield. Despite the comic’s delight in science, Hadfield becomes symbolic of the way it dispels fun myths like the Loch Ness Monster.
Still, Schreiber understands the downsides to geekery, the prevalent sexism of Game of Thrones, the fantasies of self-proclaimed Yeti expert and cosmonaut Brian Blessed.Regardless, he loves the old blowhard and hopes he keeps pursuing his ill-advised projects, if only because history demonstrates that the wrong person in the right place can still advance humanity.
Candid and consistently funny, educational and packed with quirky talking points, C*ockblocked really ought to attract more geeks to its cause.
Until 24 August. Today 5:40pm, more info
