Having already produced several hit TV shows, Netflix has now announced its first original movie: a sequel to martial arts classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
In the first deal of its kind, the video streaming giant has teamed up with the Weinstein Company to produce the follow-up to Ang Lee’s Academy Award winner. Titled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, the film will be released simultaneously across Netflix and in select IMAX theaters next summer.
This is set to be the first of several original movie announcements from the Californian company. Netflix seemingly hopes that the move with change the way Hollywood deals with future releases, which currently see films released for streaming months after their initial theatrical run.
Yuen Wo-Ping is set to direct, with stars Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen set to reprise their roles from the previous film. The original production team, minus Ang Lee, are set to return with shooting to get underway in New Zealand in the near future.
Having enjoyed unprecedented success with their original television series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, it seems Netflix has the film world lined up within its sights.
