5 of the best barbers in Manchester
Rubber Soul, Manchester

One not-so-insignificant dilemma for the modern man is where to get a decent haircut. Gone are the days of your mum running an electric razor over your bonce, it’s time to go out into the world and find a barber you can trust. Someone who understands the real you and represent it via the dead protein cells on top of your cranium.

But it’s a delicate task. One false move and you’ll spend the next few weeks feeling and looking like a muppet. Thankfully Manchester is chock-full of excellent men’s hairdressers, whether you want a quick no-nonsense trim, or a Bacchanalian experience full of hot wax, scented oils, and cut-throat blades.

Here’s our expert guide to the best barbers in Manchester.

Rubber Soul

Opening less than a year ago, Rubber Soul is the newest kid on the barber block and already has the best word of mouth in Manchester. Despite the name, it’s much more than Mod haircuts and Beatles mops: head stylist Davey cut his teeth working for some of the best stylists in the country, and comes with a repertoire of savvy techniques you won’t find anywhere else. Far and away the best mid-priced barbers in the city.

Cutting hair and sculpting beards since the start of the century, MacLures played no small part in creating the Northern Quarter as we know it today. The price might be at the high-end, but there’s a reason for that. Well-versed with any hairstyle you could possibly want, if there’s hair on your head, they’ll deal with it. And deal with it well.

If efficiency’s your bag, then Crown Barbers is the one for you. Tucked away at the bottom of Deansgate, the motto here is quick, quiet and quality. Perfect for those days when you’re in no mood for chit-chat, Crown Barbers provide an oasis of hair-snipping calm, done quick-smart, in total silence and cheap at twice the price.

The cheapest good-quality cut we’ve had in Manchester, Blade is based slap-bang in the middle of barber-central, aka Tib Street in the Northern Quarter. With a Rockabilly sensibility, Blade harks back to the traditional men’s hairdresser, getting the job done quickly and with minimum fuss. You’ll probably get something for the weekend if you ask nicely.

Barber Barber

And finally, the bête noire of Mancunian male hairdressers. Barber Barber certainly isn’t for everyone. Especially not women – they’re banned from setting foot inside. This is a place for ‘scoundrels and gentlemen’ only, and as such customers are encouraged to drink beer, whatever time of day. But despite all this silly try-hard machismo, they do cut a mean hairstyle. Even Joe Pasquale gets his hair done there. Hardcore.
