9 reasons why Amy Schumer should be your new favourite person
Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is everywhere right now.

Since the launch of her US sketch show Inside Amy Schumer, which began airing on Comedy Central in 2013, Schumer has been gaining notoriety with gradually increasing momentum. But 2015 has seen her blow up.

As well as having a blockbuster movie in the shape of Trainwreck out at the moment (which she both wrote and stars in) she has appeared on every single high profile talk show worth mentioning over the past few months, and she’s plastered over women’s magazines everywhere.

Which is pretty ironic as she can’t get enough of taking the piss out of them, saying in a recent speech that “some of them make you feel bad just for being born with a pussy.”

Controversial, hilarious and self-deprecating, Schumer has been recognised as of the funniest comedians of our time. And a feminist too. Yay.

Why do we love her so?

Well, it’s obvious really. But here’s a list anyway.

1. She doesn’t conform

Schumer won the title of ‘Trailblazer’ at the 2015 Glamour Awards. In response to the award she joked that she’s going to start referring to herself as such from now on. “When people ask if I’m a feminist, I’ll say, ‘I’m actually more of a trailblazer…'”

Not one to conform, she veered away from a traditional acceptance speech, setting the tone early when she declared out of nowhere:

“I’m probably 160lbs right now and I can catch a dick whenever I want”

Hi-la-rious. And all of this made even better by a guffawing Jennifer Saunders stood in the background the whole time.

2. She’s controversial

On giving blood:

“I donated blood today. That’s what I call getting an AIDS test.”

On racism:

“You know what the worst part about my drinking is? When I’m drunk I slur. You know, like I say racial slurs. Wow, nobody likes that at a barbeque.”

On being pregnant:

“I have an excuse, actually, why I’ve been drinking so much. I haven’t said this out loud yet – this is exciting – I’m drinking for two. Thank you, wow. I mean, just for now. Somebody’s being evicted.”

3. She’s not afraid to show emotion… and neither is Jimmy Fallon

Schumer appeared on the Late Show with Jimmy Fallon where they conducted part of the interview while acting out different emotions. Personal favourites include ‘a little too tipsy’ and ‘horny and scared’. Watch for yourself.

4. She is unflinchingly self-aware

Speaking about people having sex with her, she said:

“I usually feel pretty good about myself. I know what I look like. You’d bang me, but you wouldn’t blog about it. You won’t be Twittering ‘You won’t believe who I’m inside.’ It’s fine.”

5. She showed David Letterman her ‘vagina’

When prompted by Letterman to do something she would “regret” on the show, Schumer didn’t need asked twice. Although it is seriously doubtful that she regretted it afterwards. No shame. We love you Amy.

6. She will make you feel better about your current life status

Fed up of feeling as though your friends are leaving you behind with their mortgages, pensions, engagement rings and babies? Schumer has your back.

“The girls I grew up with, they’re living normal, adult lives. So they call me now and they’re like, ‘Amy, I’m pregnant.’ And I still react like, ‘What are you going to do? I’ll drive you, I guess.’”

“All my friends are getting married. I guess I’m just at that age where people give up.”

7. Her Kim and Kanye face plant was everything

“I think falling is the funniest thing and so I just took a dive right in front of them and pretended like I fell. [Kanye] did not crack a smile at any point… and there’s no way either of them had any idea who I am.”

8. She made Ellen DeGeneres cry with laughter

When asked if she would consider moving to L.A. on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Schumer answered with a categoric no:

“I mean, I don’t fit in here. Just straight up body type. Like in L.A., my arms register as legs and it’s like, ‘Why is that octopus out on Sunset?’ It’s not for me out here. It’s not… I cry. I just sit in my room [crying].”

9. Her perfectly pitched awkwardness

When being interviewed about her new movie Trainwreck, Schumer took a dislike to the patronising male interviewer. All was going well until he deicded to refer to her character in the movie as “skanky” – a character that Schumer had already pointed out is based on her in real life.

Things continue to take a turn for the worse. When she’s asked if she would like to make more movies, Schumer sarcastically deadpans that she would do whatever it takes to get another interview him again. It’s almost as bad as Cara Delevingne’s interview with these chumps.

Yep. If Amy Schumer wasn’t already your favourite person, it seems likely that she will be now.
