Allen Toussaint playlist: 15 essential songs and covers
allen toussaint

The name Allen Toussaint may not be one that’s well known outside of avid music fans, but like many great songwriters, his influence looms much larger than his moniker.

The New Orleans musician and composer died yesterday in Madrid at the age of 77. He suffered a heart attack following a concert the previous night.

Although he was almost inseparable from the famous music scene of his hometown, many of Toussaint’s compositions became mainstream hits for others, including Lee Dorsey’s ‘Working In A Coal Mine’ and ‘Lady Marmalade’, the 1975 Labelle hit that gained a new lease of life thanks to Christina Aguilera et al in 2004.
