The project sees a series of nine different buildings featuring Bill Murray’s activities and pastimes, including an LA beach house and a Scottish mansion.

If you’re asking yourself the “…but is it art” question, here’s the official explanation:

“[It is] an exhibition that enjoys and considers the effects of small, miniature, big, gigantic, the scaled up and scaled down, detail and overview. It is an exhibition that questions how one experiences and measures things. It encourages comparisons and differences, instabilities and slipperiness and attempts to use exaggeration as a means of revelation. This exhibition strives for both intimacy and grandeur, to present production and consumption and hopes for imaginative flight from humble objects.”

The artist Brian Griffiths elaborates:

“Bill Murray is always authentic. He is consistently ‘BILL MURRAY’. His singularity breaks into irreducible ambiguities and contradictions – Bill the global superstar, the guy-next-door, the antibrand brand, the irrepressible Lothario, the lovable gruff, the wise cracker, the emotionally brittle, the lost man, the free-wheeling guy, the uncle you-never-had, the dignified clown, the droll philosopher and the hopeful. This exhibition takes these and many other characteristics as an approach to making art.”

Here he is on a “Scottish mansion”…

This isn’t Bill Murray, but it is a subtle Ghostbusters reference…

Griffiths has also produced a 20ft banner of Murray from a photo taken at the Cannes Film Festival, wearing clashing, checked clothing.

He is described in the image as a “contemporary ‘Mad Hatter’ seen through the digital looking-glass”.

This banner will appear on the wall of the BALTIC for the duration of the exhibition:
