At first glance, Sheffielders don’t seem to be the soppiest of people, but beyond the tough exterior hides a much softer side.
On the lead up to the dreaded Valentine’s Day, here are some of our top tips for lovely things for couples to do in the city.
1. Cuddle some alpacas
— Katie (@Golddust_Katie) July 23, 2015
Are the alpacas Sheffield’s cutest best kept secret? Nothing says romance like fluffy animals.

2. Eat an uncomfortable amount of French cuisine
The folk at Chez Lahou know that the way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach. Once you’ve seen the size of their portions you’ll know what we’re talking about.

3. Go on a movie date

A meal and a film is a tried and tested date formula. Start with dinner and a few drinks in the Showroom bar, before heading through to watch the latest arthouse romantic movie or Hollywood rom-com.

4. Stay on a houseboat

A romantic night in away is all well and good, but why stay in a hotel when you can stay in a houseboat? Moored at the quirky Victoria Quays, they’re just a few minute’s walk from the city centre, and come with on-board full English in the morning.

5. Drink posh hot chocolate

Cocoa Wonderland’s speciality is pure decadence: thick dark Belgian hot chocolate with lashings of whipped cream. Their cute little cafes are perfect for a quiet date and chocolatey indulgence.

6. Take in a view of the city
Sheffield is blessed with more green spaces than you could shake a stick at. A wander up Parkwood Springs in the north offers a brilliant vantage point across the entire city. Part of the Full Monty was filmed up there too, and if that isn’t romantic I don’t know what is.
7. Share a candlelit meal
A good Italian meal is a classic romantic gesture, and Piccolo’s has it all – good wine, amazing food, and an intimate atmosphere.

8. Relax at the spa
Unwind together in 1877’s Turkish baths, have a massage, drink copious amounts of complimentary tea, and just spend some quality time in each other’s company. They even have some special Valentine’s offers to tempt you.

9. Stroll through the gardens

10. Share an ice cream sundae
Gelato’s ice cream is to die for, and ideal for sharing. They also have a huge selection of waffles, crepes, and cakes, so it’s the perfect treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Picture House Social is a bar unlike anything else in Sheffield. Situated in the old ballroom of the iconic 1920s Abbeydale Picture House, the dark walls, and sumptuous furnishings make for intimate surroundings for a romantic drink. Add into the equation the weird and wonderful ever-changing cocktail menu, pizzas, and ping-pong tables, and you have the recipe for an entertaining romantic evening, with a touch of healthy competition.

12. Visit iconic romantic graffiti
— Guy miller (@BrewGuy_) August 4, 2015
The Park Hill graffiti is an iconic part of the Sheffield skyline, the words I Love You Will U Marry Me emblazoned on the bridge connecting can be seen from far away. The graffiti has gained enough fame over the years that Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys has been seen with it printed on a t shirt, and Thornbridge Brewery have even named a beer after it.
13. Belay each other
We are in one of the best cities for climbing in the UK, with plenty of walls to chose from and only a short bus ride out into the Peak District for the real deal. There really is no better way to say I Love You than by entrusting them with your life.
The Climbing Works, Centenary Works, Little London Road, S8 0UJ – climbingworks.com
14. Share afternoon tea
Cakes, scones, tea, those cute little sandwiches, the Vintage Pantry in the Antiques Quarter has everything you need for a proper afternoon tea.

The Five Weirs Walk is a beautiful route for a sunny afternoon stroll. It takes it sections of the old industrial district, as well as woodland and old fishing pastures. There’s even some cool graffiti on the route, which starts at the Lady’s Bridge by the Wicker – more info
16. Reach lofty heights
Take your relationship to the next level – literally. Just a short drive from Sheffield is the Virgin hot air balloon show ground. Enjoy views of god’s own county (and a bit of Derbyshire) with a glass of bubbly – more info
17. Relax in front of a roaring fire
There are plenty of pubs in Sheffield with real fires, but a firm favourite will always be Fox House. After a good stomp around Burbage Edge and the Longshaw Estate, there is nothing better than snuggling up in front of the real log fire with a roast and a pint.

20. Visit a secret garden
Tucked away at the side of Hillsborough park is a romantic walled garden. Full of roses, fountains, and ponds, it’s a beautiful space to hide from the world and spend time with your sweetheart.
21. Treat yourselves to cocktails
What the people at The York don’t know about cocktails probably just isn’t worth knowing. They’re always looking for new and exciting spirits to fit into their range, and the candlelit bar makes the perfect backdrop for supping them.

22. Get your hands dirty
Patrick Swayze showed us all too well just how sexy pottery making can be. Fired Arts offers the chance to get involved, and make a romantic gift that is slightly more personal.
