Our new band of the week is Brighton based The Magic Gang.
Following our interview and their guide to their hometown earlier in the week, they’ve put together an eclectic playlist of 10 songs for your listening pleasure that have helped to define their taste, and range from Beirut to Bob Dylan.
Read on for what they have to say about some of the songs, and listen to the full playlist at the end of this post.
1. Michael Jackson – P.Y.T
“I’ve started listening to Thriller a lot recently. This song is really slick and full of energy. I love the backing vocals.”
2. The Capris – There’s A Moon Out Tonight
“This represents everything I love about old vocal group, doo woppy tunes. Simple but beautiful melody reinforced by the harmonies.”
3. Beirut – Fener
“I love this whole album but this song is a stand out for me. Amazing use of space and 60s sounding stabby guitars and piano. Very spooky change of tempo half way through the song which is great as well.”
4. Darryl Hall and John Oates – Had I Known You Better Then
“Kristian put me onto to Hall and Oates recently. This tune is so good. It’s not one of the bangers they’re most famous for but it’s just a great classic rock song with a really nice acoustic guitar and great vocal interplay.”
5. Deerhunter – Take Care
“Beautiful and uplifting vocal melody and lyrics.”
6. Peter Frampton – Show Me the Way
“Not much to comment on this one other than it’s just a smash.”
7. Majical Cloudz – Your Eyes
“Saw these guys play in a church in Bethnal Green and loved them ever since.”
8. Kurt Vile – That’s Life, tho (almost hate to say)
“The imagery in this song is amazing; the rest of the new album is pretty great too.”
9. Bob Dylan – Boots Of Spanish Leather
“This is such a good love song, I kind of prefer this version to Girl From the Northern Country.”
10. Roberta Flack feat. Donny Hathaway – Back Together Again
“This one’s a belter, big groove.”
