Anthony Longstaff delivers his verdict on an epic show from the alt-rockers at Leeds Arena on Saturday, and shares his finest photos from the night.

A surprise headliner for this year’s Leeds & Reading festival, Foals have embarked on a massive arena tour across the UK.

Their mounting success has not been short in coming since their formation some 10 years ago. And with four studio albums now under their belt, Foals are emerging one of the UK’s biggest and finest acts.

Bestowed with a ‘Best British Group’ nomination at last night’s BRITS, Foals storm into Leeds with massive expectations for their near sellout show. With supports from Everything Everything and DJ sets from Peace, I’ve had worse Saturday nights in Leeds – I can tell you that.

Opening with ‘Snake Oil’, frontman Yannis Philippakis embraces the venue with all his trademark energetic certitude and continues this tirelessly throughout the entire set. Drowning the arena in an emblazoned gown of deep guitar riffs, Foals are absolutely on fire.

They continue their set with tracks including ‘Give It All’, ‘Spanish Sahara’ and ‘Inhaler’; it’s an immense performance, the most lively I’ve seen this band in a long time. Back on stage for a three-song encore, Yannis is all over the front few rows of the crowd, taking his time to personally thank as many people he can reach his hands to.

If you didn’t attend this gig, you missed out.

Not only have Foals set a precedent, they’ve also cemented themselves for a much anticipated headline slot at Leeds Festival in August.
