Portsmouth has an eclectic mix of nightlife, so whether you’re a sitter, a grinder or a bar stool hogger, here are some of our favourite clubs in the city that are worthy of your time and your mad dance skills.
As Portsmouth nights out go, some of the best take place at HB. Between becoming best friends with a drag queen and throwing some very questionable shapes to Destiny’s Child, there is a place for everyone. £1.50 drinks and cheap entry on a Monday also makes for a lighter punch to your pockets.

The indie basement club that is great on a Thursday with cheap drinks and £1 entry if you put yourself on the Facebook guestlist in advance. The music is alternative and indie rock – expertly orchestrated by the legend that is DJ Pete – and is perfect for a night out with none of the fuss. Scandals also has an unspoken and wonderful ‘no heels’ policy which a lot of ladies will enjoy embracing.

As much as we hate to admit it, Liquid is a blessing to the residents of Pompey. When in doubt ‘sicko liqo’ is a guaranteed cheap and fun night out. With £2 drinks on a Friday and back to back chart music, it’s hard to stay away from and the likelihood of ending up there dancing to ‘Cheerleader’ and Swifty is very high.
Connaught Drill Hall, Stanhope Road, PO1 1DU – liquidclubs.com/portsmouth
Tiger is renowned for its themed nights and Hijack Thursdays is the best thing to happen to Portsmouth students since instant noodles. Putting your name on the Facebook guestlist and flashing your student card on the door means discounted entry and drinks.
There are also themed rooms that play different music genres, from R&B to disco, which is great for that friend who loves R Kelly’s ‘Ignition’ just a little too much. You can also rock your glad rags here without judgement, unlike some other dress-down orientated places.
Gunwharf Quays, Gunwharf Road, PO1 3TP – tigertiger.co.uk/portsmouth
At the weekends the atmosphere at Bar 38 buzzing, with music and dancing but the opportunity to sit down and chill out too. The music is mixed depending on the DJ – chart, R&B and even a sly bit of garage. In pretty much the centre of Gunwharf, it’s a great place to start off or spend your evening if you’re not going for a heavy one.
