There are more than a few ways of watching films these days, from heading to the cinema to streaming them to your tablet on the daily commute.

Now Portsmouth film fans can add beanbags to the list.

Following a soft launch earlier in the year inside The Old Barn in Milton, the organisers of BeanBag Cinema are now ready to bring a selection of cult classics and box office hits to their big screen, all with a range of home comforts.

According to BeanBag Cinema’s Chris Vaux, the idea originally came from his business partner, Steve Hudson, who mentioned the idea of BBCC, the BeanBag Cinema Club, while the pair were discussing films.

“It kind of got left there, but I latched back onto it and it’s become a kitsch little “thing” for people to do. It’s intimate and a different way to enjoy a film in more informal surroundings.”

Many will know The Old Barn as a music venue, which is what guest will find every Friday and Saturday night, and Chris is used to the surprised look on the faces of cinema-goers when they enter the beanbag-filled venue.

“The exterior gives no indication as to what’s inside, it’s a really cosy and friendly atmosphere. Most of our customers are regulars that love the little community it’s building. We have a bar serving a full range of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks plus sweets and pints of popcorn. It’s pretty quirky and the bean bags are really comfy too.”

Following this week’s screening of Kingsman: The Secret Service, regulars can look forward to the likes of Paddington and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Chris explaining that there’s also an option for film fans to schedule their own night at the cinema.

“People can book their very own cinema nights for parties at other times of the week, which is a really fun and different way to celebrate your birthday with friends.”
