Manchester’s most heartwarming tributes to Caroline Aherne
The Royle Family

We said a final goodbye to ‘our Denise’ this weekend and Manchester mourned one of its finest comedy writers

Actress and writer Caroline Aherne has lost her battle with cancer at the age of 52.

As the creator of iconic British comedy figures such as the arresting pensioner Mrs. Merton, as well as our favourite couch potatoes The Royle Family, many across the UK were hit hard by the news of Aherne’s untimely passing – but maybe none more so than Manchester.

Alongside her writing partner Craig Cash, Caroline Aherne did more to promote a loving view of the working class in the city than anyone else.

Many of the city’s great and good have been paying tribute to her:

Noel Gallagher dedicated ‘Half The World Away’ to her at a US gig

RIP Kaz..💔 I shall sing for you tonight. (My god you made us laugh!)

At a show in Nashville, Noel offered some words for his friend before playing The Royle Family‘s theme tune:

“Her name was Caroline and she was a very, very, very funny woman. She used this next song on a very, very, very, very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family”

Steve Coogan wrote a touching tribute

The Mancunian comic talked about her “northern, working class, Irish immigrant humour” in a tribute in The Guardian.

Ralf Little took to Twitter to offer a tribute

The Oldham-born actor will be forever known as ‘lurkio’ thanks to Aherne’s fantastic writing.

Resident Gogglebox family The Malones also expressed their sadness on social media

While known to many for her earlier works, there were many younger fans who knew Caroline as the ‘voice of Gogglebox’ – as she had narrated the show alongside Craig Cash since the show’s beginning.

Manchester’s Malone family have more than a few things in common with The Royle Family themselves.

The Fast show co-star John Thomson also shared his sadness on Twitter

Before her breakout as Mrs. Merton, Aherne was known for roles as the chatty checkout girl on hit comedy sketch series The Fast Show as well as her role as the spouse of John Thomson’s trodden down husband ‘Roy’.

It’s a good time to remind everyone that The Royle Family is available in full on Netflix. So you can re-visit some of Aherne’s greatest work right now.

Grab a cup of tea and get nestled into the sofa.
