Five expert tips for nurturing your nails

Regardless of your gender, having nice nails is a top priority for the majority of us. (Long gone are the days when society said boys couldn’t indulge in a manicure now and again. The word literally starts with ‘man’, for goodness sake.)

Long or short, polished or plain – regardless of how you wear them, basic nail care is the same for everyone.

Here, Carly and Holly from Edinburgh’s Buff Concept Store at the New Waverley Arches share five easy but essential tips for keeping your nails on top form.

1. Use oil…

“Whether you have natural nails or enhancements on, nail and cuticle oil is a must. An almond based oil will help to nourish the nails, and stop them from peeling, chipping and lifting.”

2. … and do it every day

“Oiling your nails is as important as moisturising your face and body. If you make it part of your daily routine, you’ll soon see a difference in the condition of your nails. We suggest using oil before you go to bed so that the product has time to get to work overnight.”

3. Your nail file is your friend

“This one is simple, but so easily forgotten. If you don’t file your nails regularly then they’ll become ragged, uneven, split and broken. Filing will keep everything uniform and lower the chances of a nail breaking off and catching. If you want them to grow long and strong, you have to file them first.”

4. Beauty comes from within

“Like your parents always told you – eat your greens. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are the main cause of weak and dry nails, and sometimes a topical treatment isn’t enough to fix the damage. If you’re healthy on the inside, you’re more likely to be healthy on the outside.”

5. Treat yo’self

“Having your talons manicured regularly is the best way to keep on top of things, and it’ll leave you feeling pampered, too. It’s a win, win situation.”
