Why Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is (probably) the busiest man in Hollywood

Let’s face it – only a jabroni could hate on the rise of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

The former pro-wrestler has made the crossover into Hollywood with huge success, and is now one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

Johnson has managed something that many other film stars haven’t quite got to grips with – it’s virtually impossible to dislike him.

Maybe for a generation of young men – who played with The Rock action figures or on wrestling video games – it’s like seeing these imaginary adventures come to life. Your action figure is out there saving lives, fighting bad guys and posting inspirational videos on Instagram.

Another part of The Rock’s success is his work-ethic. To give you a glimpse of how many plates he’s currently spinning – we’ve rounded up every project ‘The People’s Champ’ is confirmed on, from now until 2019.

Ballers

What is it? An HBO original show that perhaps originally plugged the gap left by Entourage, the upcoming series of Ballers looks to push against that presumption.

The Rock plays retired American football player turned high powered sports agent, doing his best to guide his often egomaniac clients. This series sees the addition of Andy Garcia as a rival to the throne and offers more thrills and spills.

Moana

What is it? An Oceanic adventure story from Disney, which could prove to be a hit on the scale of Frozen. Johnson plays the role of a demi-God, who helps the lead hero Moana in her adventures across the South Pacific and beyond.

Jumanji

What is it? Stepping into murky waters, and we’re not just talking about in the film, The Rock has signed up alongside Jack Black to offer a re-imagining of a Robin Wiliams childhood classic. Of course there are plenty of reasons for people to be concerned, but Johnson seems to be aware of that, writing on his Instagram:

“An important thing that I want to be honest and bring up is Robin Williams. The love and respect I have for this man is boundless. You have my word, we will honor his name and the character of “Alan Parrish” will stand alone and be forever immortalized in the world of JUMANJI in an earnest and cool way.”

A classy move and one way to dissolve that tension.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth 4

What is it? Erm, we haven’t been given the third instalment yet. But The Rock is signed up for another adventure already.

Shazam!

What is it? A project originally shelved, but set to be revitalised by Warner Bros. Shazam sees The Rock dip his toes into the DC universe, with a role as ‘Black Adam’ – an ancient relative of Captain Marvel with a conflicted past of good and evil. Let’s face it, if you’re looking for a ready-made superhero then Dwayne is the guy.

Rampage

What is it? 1980s arcade game classic gets a modern movie update. The game let players take control of three gigantic monsters and head on wrecking spree of the city, so we could see The Rock once again stepping up to the plate as Earth’s only saviour.

Doc Savage

What is it? Often considered the precursor to the great American hero Superman, Doc Savage is a 1930s adventurer who was known as the ‘Man of Bronze’. One of the most interesting aspects of this project is the inclusion of Shane Black’s name, a director known for witty action movies such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Last Boy Scout and, more recently, The Nice Guys.

San Andreas 2

San-Andreas

What is it? The follow-up to the last year’s disaster-porn genre movie will see Dwayne once again attempting to protect normal folks from natural disasters, but this time upping the scale from one city to the entire globe. Meh, we reckon he’s up to the challenge.
