Mini-NES: Five classic Nintendo games we can’t wait to re-visit

Stop the press! Gaming giants Nintendo, fresh off the back of the overwhelming success of Pokémon Go, just surprise-announced a new console

Well, sort of…

Everything old is new again with the Mini-NES, a smaller, more compact version of Nintendo’s first widely available console.

The tiny looking device will cost just $60 (around £45), and will come pre-packaged with 30 classic NES games.

It also comes with a HDMI cable so you can hook up those old-skool games to your shiny new plasma, a power adapter and something Nintendo is calling the NES Classic Controller, “patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller.”

With the console hitting shop shelves on November 11, here are five classic games we can’t wait to revisit.

Super Mario Bros.

An obvious choice perhaps, but who would pass up an opportunity to revist the origins of arguably gaming’s most famous figure.

Mario revolutionised the gaming world in Super Mario Bros. – as he has continued to do to this day – and the thought of that theme tune blasting from our home cinema system has tingles shooting up our spine.

The Legend of Zelda

From one gaming hero to another, we also can’t wait to get back to gaming’s earlier iteration of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda.

Sure, the games since have been packed with ever more stuff to do thanks to increasingly powerful tech, but Link’s adventures were still immersive and gripping even 30 years ago.

Metroid

Metroid‘s eerie amalgamation of otherwordly exploration and alien combat became a sub-genre unto itself (it’s the ‘Metroid’ part of ‘Metroidvania’), and we feel Samus Aran has always been one of the more underrated characters in Nintendo’s vast roster.

So we’re looking forward to tracing that story from the beginning.

Punch-Out!!

Who would’ve thought Nintendo would have such a firm footing in the long and storied history of fighting games, eh?

Well, they do with the Punch-Out!! series, which has had aspiring virtual boxers sparring (and breaking controllers) for years.

Unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately? – this isn’t the infamously hard Mike Tyson version, so your gamepad should stay in one piece for now.

Ice Climber

This puzzler/platformer is one of Nintendo’s lesser known about titles from their classic period, but it definitely deserves a second look-in today.

Players control Popo and Nana – collectively known as the Ice Climbers – as they venture up 32 ice-covered mountains to recover stolen vegetables from a giant condor. Becaus, obviously. Quirky and addictive.

Of course, picking just five must play games from a list of 30 classics is nigh on impossible, so here’s the full list of games that will come bundled with the Mini-NES:

  • Balloon Fight
  • BUBBLE BOBBLE
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
