Eight of the best eateries on Lothian Road
Bread Meats Bread Edinburgh

Remember when Lothian Road only hosted a few eating spots?

The perfect location for anyone planning a pre-theatre/cinema/concert bite to eat or a night out in the city centre, Lothian Road is now home to a number of popular bars and restaurants.

We’ve selected eight of the best worth your time.

The Hanging Bat

Expect a fresh approach to food and drink at The Hanging Bat: not only do they brew their own ales and import rare options, but they serve beers in smaller sizes in case you don’t want a full pint.

Their food menu merges classic American with a rustic twist, inventing new dishes along the way – who’s up for beer mac’n’cheese, a haggis-topped hot dog or two pounds of weighty chilli and pulled pork laden nachos?

The Beer Kitchen

Innis & Gunn’s wide array of pukka beers has hit the sweet spot for locals and beyond, with their latest venture, The Beer Kitchen, filling a gap in the market on Lothian Road. Many traditional dishes on the menu are given a modern spin; the fish and chips are beer battered with Innis & Gunn’s IPA, and their rarebit sauce is infused with original Innis & Gunn.

Their meat is locally sourced by Shaws Fine Meats and the establishment goes as far as satisfying the more demanding customers, providing giant mushroom vol-au-vent and terrines. They also serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, so you should be sorted whatever time you’re passing.

Bread Meats Bread

Originating in Glasgow, Bread Meats Bread is a burger lover’s dream, offering traditional burgers alongside their own creations such as the Lothian Wolf (American cheese, Crispy Bacon, Pulled Pork in BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and ‘Nduja mayo) and the Fear and Lothian (double smashed burger with chillies & onions, with American cheese, jalapeños, Buffalo ketchup and Harissa mayo).

We can also recommend the artery-worrying Luther burger, featuring a grilled glazed ring donut wrapped around a double smashed burger with American cheese, candied bacon, fried onions and more. Epic.

Also starting out in Glasgow, Topolabamba originated earned rave reviews and decided to head east. It has an extensive Mexican menu and an assortment of alcoholic beverages. Choices include king prawn tacos, fiery habanero chicken wings, and an option to order different street foods for sharing.

There’s something for everyone at Red Squirrel, from 5oz steaks to vegetarian options and a separate gluten free menu.

Known locally for its burger menu – try the venison and black pudding patty or the jerk pork – as well as a strong list of classic meals and desserts, they can all be washed down with an impressive selection of beers and ciders from around the world.

Edinburgh isn’t short on Italian restaurants, one of which is the family-run Frizzante, which has been serving Lothian Road foodies for over 30 years. Open for lunch and dinner with different menus available throughout the day, there’s an impressive two course pre-theatre deal for £14.95.

Filmhouse

You don’t have to see a film to take advantage of Filmhouse’s extensive food menu, with meals served from the recently refurbished kitchen. Enjoy a hearty breakfast from 8am, or choose from the impressive specials menu later in the day. If in doubt, you can’t go far wrong with a plate of their famous nachos, washed down with a pint of their own-label McGuffin beer.

You can also take your drinks into a film, just remember to pour it into a plastic cup beforehand.
