The best new additions to Netflix in August
The Get Down

It’s a good month to be a Netflix user, with a big batch of original series and some choice films being added to the streaming service this August

Let’s face it, you’re never short of endless scrolling material on Netflix. But it’s worth pointing out that this month has seen the site really knock it out of the park with ‘must-see’ films and programmes. Including widely anticipated original shows.

To help you find your way through the maze of new releases, we’ve picked out the coolest content landing this month, and included a comprehensive list of everything new at the end too.

Happy viewing!

Brooklyn

What is it? One of the 2015’s stand-out drama films, Brooklyn tells the story of a young Irish woman’s emigration to America in the early ’50s – and a romantic triangle which spans the Atlantic ocean. The Nick Hornby penned story is sweet without ever being saccharine, and was a worthy nominee in three Oscar categories, including a ‘Best Actress’ nod for Saoirse Ronan.

The Get Down

What is it? Be it a TV masterpiece or a big sprawling car crash, you know you have to watch The Get Down. Baz Lurhmann’s first venture on the small screen sees him telling the story of the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx and the trailers look promising. However, The Get Down has been dogged with production issues and now has the title of ‘the most expensive TV show ever’. This could go either way.

Gotham (Season 2)

What is it? After failing to ignite Caped Crusader fans with the first series, the second outing of Batman prequel Gotham saw the show really come into it’s own. Far grittier and with more villains than you could shake a Batmobile at – it could be time to venture back into Detective Jim Gordon’s city district.

Creed

What is it? Much like its main protagonist, just when you thought the Rocky franchise was all punched out, it comes back stronger than ever. Creed sees Sylvester Stallone pass the baton onto Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, and the new twist in the Rocky story gives it new life and more-than-capable leading man.

Wolf Hall (Season 1)

BBC

What is it? The Beeb has had a crazy good few years of drama output and, for many, Wolf Hall was the starting point. The show sees Mark Rylance demonstrate his impressive acting chops as scheming social-climber Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII. It’s all lavish production, understated acting and political intrigue. The BBC at its finest.
