Surprisingly, Netflix’s EDM movie is not a joke

Netflix has been on a bit of a roll of late, producing great original series after great original series, and a number of exceptional original films

Unfortunately, while the likes of Stranger Things might be doing the rounds in households up and down the country, with its brilliantly retro homage to 80s suspense thrillers, the latest original production from the streaming giant looks like a big fat joke.

Only it’s not.

Trying to make your way through the newly released trailer for XOXO without laughing is nigh on impossible.

The streaming giant’s original movie, set to debut on August 26, is trying to be a celebration of the EDM movement.

If you have no idea what all those abbreviations means, you’ll have no chance. Watch it below:

The film follows a group of 20-somethings on a “keerazy” adventure to the biggest EDM festival in America, the titular XOXO.

It seems to be a very loose plot if the trailer is anything to go by, which seems more keen on spurting tired millenial clichés that speak to the euphoric power of “the drop” and bass wubs than anything of actual artistic merit. Here are our favourites:

This is real music!”

“This is your moment. You gotta grab it.”

“I used to feel so alone, but out there in this field, I….”

“When you make a connection with somebody it gets you out of yourself.”

We can’t wait to have our lives changed by this no doubt joyous coming-of-age experience – directed by first time director Christopher Louie and starring Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), Ryan Hansen, Ione Skye, Chris D’Elia, and Colin Woodell – but we guess we’ll have to wait another three weeks.
