South African hip-hop act claim Suicide Squad stole their style

South African rap-rave outfit Die Antwoord have struck another blow to ailing superhero movie Suicide Squad, calling out director David Ayer over claims he “jocked” their style

The argument stems from claims by the band’s Yolandi Visser, who in an Instagram post included a video highlighting some of the similarities between herself and bandmate Ninja, and the film’s Joker and Harley Quinn characters.

Visser claims that Ayer had contacted the band before making the movie, and alleges that members of the cast later revealed he referenced them on set while shooting:

“Cara & Jared told us how much u were talkin abt us on set but u never asked our permision to rip us off. An when ninja texted u sayin wassup wif dat u said nothin like a scared lil bitch.”

You can see the whole post below:

yes David Ayer u jockin our style. callin ninja up before your movie came our pretendin 2b down, so it looks OK when u bite our black & white graf style & our opening sequence to umshiniwam & an all da lil tiny details u nibbeld dat other people wont see but we notice. Cara & Jared told us how much u were talkin abt us on set but u never asked our permision to rip us off. An when ninja texted u sayin wassup wif dat u said nothin like a scared lil bitch. U were jus flauntin our names pretendin to b down. u aint down an u never will b. but before we knew da extent of ur two face nature – u invited us to ur movie premiere(which i didnt wanna go to) but ninja went , tinkin ur solid guy an mayb there was jus a lil "misunderstandin". Den poor ninja had to sit thru dat hole bullshit movie. An u even got da nerve to say wassup to him smilin – an ninja has to b nice cus he is there wif his kid. But we all tink u wack. U shud start a crew called:,"im a fake fuck" ask kanye if he wants to join u. Cum show ur pretty face at my studios. U know Muggs & u know where da Soul Assasin Studios at. we watin for u. @djmuggs_the_black_goat_ @zef_alien @boojie_baby_ @ragingzefboner @_dark_force_ @dejanvisser @djhitekisgod @jipsi518

Visser then goes on to claim that the pair were invited to the movie’s premiere, which – if true – would suggest Ayer to be something of a fan of the band, and would go someway to verifying at least a little bit of inspiration taken from the group’s distinct aesthetic.

“u invited us to ur movie premiere(which i didnt wanna go to) but ninja went , tinkin ur solid guy an mayb there was jus a lil “misunderstandin”. Den poor ninja had to sit thru dat hole bullsh*t movie.”

It’s yet another blow for the film which, despite a long advertising campaign and a tonne of hype, has disappointed both critically and financially.

WOW247’s reviewer Matthew Turner called it “messy, derivative and nowhere near as cool or as edgy as it thinks it is” in his two-star review, and the film has divided fans, with some even going to far as to set up a petition calling for the end of reviews aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, which currently has Suicide Squad listed at a dismal 26% approval rating.

Die Antwoord also suggested Ayer should start an “I’m a fake f*ck” club along with Kanye West, who the band had previously claimed interrupted a studio conversation with them to watch a pornographic video back in May.

Bizarre.
