Fringe shows you need to see: Showstopper! The Improvised Musical
Showstopper Musical

Back for their ninth year at the Fringe, Showstopper! The Improvised Musical invites the audience to suggest the topic for a brand new, totally spontaneous musical every single night.

What is it?

The audience of Showstopper! is in control every night, choosing both the setting and title of the improvised musical, as well as their preferred musical theatre composers, whose styles are then pastiched in the consequent show. Masterminded by a skilled improvisation troupe, the end product is a totally unique production that never can or will be reproduced again.

Why should I see it?

It’s fascinating to watch the way in which Showstopper!‘s band and performers communicate without ever saying a word. The cast develop a story without knowing the conclusion, and sing without having prepared the lyrics to an astoundingly a high standard. We know what you’re thinking, but the group can’t even hastily share ideas backstage without the audience finding out, thanks to the magic of microphones.

Stand-out moment?

Due to the nature of the show, no two stand-out moments are the same, but you can always count on their being at least one.

How can I see it?

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is at Pleasance Courtyard, until 28 Aug, 6pm, more info

Anything else?

Even minor slip-ups add to this show – no one wants to see the cast saunter through like it’s a brief jog in the park. A little difficulty in rhyming a lyric or improvising a script only adds to the enjoyment value.
