‘Westworld’ and ’12 Monkeys’ getting TV show remakes

Sci-fi classics Westworld and 12 Monkeys are both being remade for TV – with Terry Gilliam branding the 12 Monkeys reboot ‘”dumb” and “ridiculous”.

JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan are developing the Westworld remake for HBO, while 12 Monkeys is reportedly getting a pilot on the Syfy channel.

Gilliam has hit out at the decision to remake 12 Monkeys – which only today features in our greatest time travel movies guide.

In an interview with Screen Daily, he said:

“I know nothing about that. That’s just ridiculous. It doesn’t have anything to do with me and no-one has contacted me.

“It’s a very dumb idea. If it was going to be any good, it would have to be written by David and Janet Peoples, who wrote the film.”

Starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, and revolving around a time traveler’s mission to avert a global apocalypse, Gilliam’s 1995 drama is widely considered to be a modern classic.

1973 thriller Westworld – about a futuristic wild west theme park that goes horribly wrong – is similarly seminal.

Written and directed by Michael Crichton, and starring Yul Brynner, it received widespread acclaim upon its release.

Take a look back at the original ‘Westworld’:

What do you think of these planned remakes? Are they a good idea?
