Edinburgh has long had a special association with Hogmanay thanks to its street party, but there’s a lot more to the city’s celebrations than the official events.

Whether you’re into roots, hip hop, easy listening or guilty pleasures, here Milo McLaughlin picks out Edinburgh’s best Hogmanay events for those wanting to see  in 2014 in style.

VEGAS! The Grand Hogmanay Ball

An annual tradition in the Capital, the Vegas! Grand Hogmanay Ball will no doubt be the most glamorous place to be this Hogmanay with a soundtrack of classic easy listening and big band tunes accompanied by cabaret and burlesque acts. Live performers include The Soul Foundation, Frankie Sumatra, Bugsy Seagull, The Vegas Showgirls & The Fabulous Scott Brothers.

Soulsville and Motherfunk Present : Mardi Gras at Midnite

Popular Edinburgh clubs Soulsville and Motherfunk join forces with dancers, costume makers and set designers to recreate that high-energy street parade atmosphere along with a funk/soul/deep disco soundtrack from DJs Fryer and Francis Dosoo.

Wee Dub Hogmanay

The Caves, Niddry Street South

Billed as “the biggest NYE night in Edinburgh for roots, dub, reggae, jungle and soundsytem heads”, Wee Dub Hogmanay features Dreadzone Jinx In Dub ft. Parly B, Capitol 1212, Riddim Tuffa Sound and many more over multiple rooms and two sound-systems.

I Love Hip Hop New Year’s Eve Party

The Bongo Club,  Cowgate

Celebrating a successful year of club nights, I love Hip Hop will be seeing 2014 in swaggering style with resident DJs Nasty P, Ritchie Ruftone [world DMC champion], P-Stylz and U-Turn,  as well as a performance from Neo-Soul act DarkSoul and funk, soul and disco upstairs with Brother Most Righteous, Surfin’ Bear & Chow Main.

Club Hive NYE 2013: Masquerade Ball

Promising three bars and two dancefloors with an affordable entry price and cheap drink deals, The Hive’s main room will feature electro, commercial, hip-hop and R’n’B whilst the back room will host retro pop and indie rock classics, with winter wonderland décor and a masquerade theme.

Summerhall HOG-manay

Summerhall’s HOG-manay rounds off  a successful year for the venue, featuring the poptastically popular London club night Guilty Pleasures, an eclectic set by DJ Michelle including house, hip-hop, indie and electro, as well as hot food including a hog roast (hence the name), five bars and plenty of craft beers and cocktails.
