Andy Serkis to direct Jungle Book movie
Motion capture ace Andy Serkis is reportedly the surprise choice to helm Warner Bros’ forthcoming Jungle Book movie – in what will be his directorial debut.
The BAFTA-nominated actor, best-known for playing Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings movies, will now go head-to-head with Iron Man director Jon Favreau, whose rival Disney adaptation recently added Idris Elba as its Shere Khan.
According to Collider, Serkis replaces Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and his CG/motion capture expertise has played a key part in him landing the job. Serkis was previously second unit director on The Hobbit movies, and has also notched up impressive mo-cap turns in Tintin and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes.
According to Deadline, Warner’s adaptation has a script by Callie Kloves, daughter of Harry Potter movie writer Steve Kloves, who is producing.
Rudyard Kipling’s much-loved tale, about a boy raised in the wild by a variety of animals, is in the public domain – and therefore not subject to rights issues.
Disney previously set a high benchmark back in 1967 with their seminal animated version, which was a box office triumph and received rapturous reviews from critics.
Enjoy a trip down memory lane with a classic moment from that film:
