James McAvoy and Emma Thompson triumph at Empire Awards

Published by

James McAvoy and Emma Thompson were crowned Best Actor and Actress at the Empire Awards last night, on an evening that rewarded both critical darlings and fan favourites.

McAvoy’s ferocious turn in Filth and Thompson’s delightful performance in Saving Mr Banks were both recognised, while Gravity walked away with the Best Film gong.

The sole award for hard hitting Oscar-winner 12 Years A Slave, meanwhile, was Michael Fassbender’s triumph in the supporting actor category.

Box Office hits including The Conjuring, The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug and Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa all received recognition on the night.

There were also special awards for Tom Cruise, Hugh JackmanArnold Schwarzenegger, Simon Pegg and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass.

While collecting his prize for Best Comedy, Steve Coogan joked about chatting Alan Partridge with the pope – and being recognised by Empire for his work on Partridge, rather than the Oscar-nominated Philomena.
