American TV network ABC have picked up Marvel spin-off Agent Carter for the 2014-15 US television season to link directly with current show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Inspired by the character of Agent Peggy Carter, who has featured in both Captain America films, the series will follow her in 1946 as she is slowly marginalised as men return from combat following the war.

The series will follow Carter working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) as she balances administrative work with secret missions for Howard Stark – while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America.

Hayley Atwell, who starred as Agent Peggy Carter in the first two films, is set to reprise her role for the television series.

The announcement means that ABC will have two shows based on the Marvel series, with Agent Carter intended as a “bridge” between season breaks in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It is unknown if any of the Avengers stars will make an appearance in either of the two ABC shows.
