Cinema Guide: Sin City 2, Million Dollar Arm and If I Stay

Published by

This week’s new releases include an ultra-violent crime thriller, a feel-good sports flick and a shameless weepie.

As ever, we check out the biggest new blockbusters, family features and independent films screening at theatres, multiplexes and arthouse cinemas near you.

Eva Green Sin City 2

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (18)

Synopsis: Several interlocking stories unwind in the titular urban hell-hole, taking in a crafty femme fatale, a poker game gone badly wrong, and a traumatized stripper out for revenge.

Review:A Dame To Kill For is as twisted and depraved as its predecessor, festooning every frame with corrupt cops, gun-toting hoodlums and scantily clad molls. Set pieces including a car chase and sword fight are directed at a breathless lick, melding heavily stylised live action and animation for each orgy of violence.” ★★★  (read more)

Million Dollar Arm (PG)

Synopsis: A down-on-his-luck Baseball agent thinks up a competition to bring two bowlers from India to America to challenge for a lucrative Major League contract.

Review: “If Jerry Maguire and Slumdog Millionaire gave birth to an impossibly cute love child, it would look something like Million Dollar Arm. It’s a polished amalgamation of countless other sports movies that compel us to root for the underdog. ” ★★★★  (read more)

If I Stay (12A)

Synopsis: Caught between life and death, a talented young musician must decide whether to return to her bittersweet existence - or move on into the afterlife.

Review: “If I Stay shamelessly tugs heartstrings through some mawkish and emotionally manipulative moments. A hoary and contrived finale is sign-posted well in advance so teenagers have plenty of time to arm themselves with enough tissues to contain their sobs and sniffles.” ★★  (read more)
