Both Howard and Hanks will return alongside screenwriter David Koepp, who worked on the first sequel.

Following The Da Vinci Code and Angels and DemonsInferno will see Professor Robert Langdon trying to prevent catastrophe connected with Dante’s Inferno, the first part of his 14th Century epic poem The Divine Comedy.

Inferno is the fourth book in Browns’ Langdon series, with the film adaptations missing out The Lost Symbol.

Although the previous Langdon films were commercially successful, they received poor reviews – The Da Vinci Code actually made our recent list of the worst movies by great directors.

The film will be released on December 26 next year.
