Hugh Grant returns to rom-coms for the first time in five years

Hugh Grant returns to his charming star-making roots in the first trailer for The Rewrite, five years after his last rom-com role.

The film sees Grant as a washed up screenwriter, forlornly re-watching his 1999 Oscar win on Youtube, who signs up to teach a writing class to pay the bills.

One of the hand-selected pretty students in his class happens to be Marisa Tomei, another character looking for love and a second chance – you get the gist.

The Rewrite is written and directed by Marc Lawrence, who previously worked with Grant on 2007 musical rom-com Music and Lyrics.

This is Grant’s first venture back to rom-coms since the Did You Hear About the Morgans?, which was also directed by Lawrence. Since then he’s dabbled in a few other genres, including a multi-character role in sci-fi drama Cloud Atlas.

The Rewrite will hit cinemas on October 8.
