As the capital city, Edinburgh is at the beating heart of Scottish culture – and not just during Festival time in August.
All year round, the city plays host to exciting events, from international rugby battles on the hallowed turf of Murrayfield stadium to the revelry of its Hogmanay party, one of the world’s greatest New Year’s Eve events.
Of course it all culminates in the epic Edinburgh Festival, the largest arts jamboree on the planet, where stand-up comedians, actors and musicians gather from all corners of the globe.
From the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June right through to the closing fireworks concert of the Edinburgh International Festival, it’s an exciting time of year, when those “in a show” seem to outnumber the rest of us, and you can find yourself rubbing shoulders with a famous face or two in the late-night bars that extend their opening hours.
But that doesn’t mean that Edinburgh goes to sleep for the rest of the year, and the ‘Athens of the North’ has much to recommend it.
For an unforgettable experience, head up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle and discover some of the city’s historical secrets.
If you’re spending a day in Edinburgh there’s plenty to see just by exploring the steep, winding lanes of the Old Town and the elegant streets of the New Town.
You can take in stunning operas, ballets and concerts at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre and the Usher Hall, see masterpieces up close at the Scottish National Gallery, and learn about everything from ancient history to particle accelerators in the wonderfully revamped National Museum of Scotland.
For a quick breather away from the bustling city streets, discover the green grounds of Holyrood House, or take a picnic along to the Meadows or the Royal Botanic Gardens.
End the day with a scenic walk up to Arthur’s Seat and admire the views out to the Firth of Forth and across the spires and rooftops of this magnificent city.
