Looking for somewhere to take your veggie or vegan friend, or perhaps you fancy a non-meat meal?

WOW Cardiff City Editor (and long time vegan) Amy Pay picks out some of the best places in Cardiff for exciting and flavourful vegetarian and vegan food, many of which would wow the tastebuds of meat-eaters too!

Fully vegetarian and vegan

Crumbs Kitchen

Behind its unassuming front, this cafe stretches up three floors overlooking Morgan Arcade. Serving nutritious, substantial and fairly priced homemade food, it’s the ideal place for a proper veggie lunch with variety (soups, salad bowls, quiche, chilli, curry and more). The vegan cakes are incredible, particularly the cinnamon and carrot cake.

Vegetarian Food Studio

This is by far the best Pan-Asian cuisine in Cardiff for vegetarians, vegans and even possibly meat-eaters. Their menu is vast, split into North Indian, South Indian and Oriental cuisine, plus there are lots of traditional sweet treats that are rarely seen in your standard Indian. Go for Atom Bombs to start – they’ll blow your head off!

Simply V

Tucked away in the top corner of Castle Emporium, this stall is the go-to for vegan sweets, fresh cakes, snacks and staples. If you struggle to find ingredients like vegan condensed milk, soya protein products and chocolatey lunchbox fillers, a trip here will be exactly what you need. They stock cookbooks, clothes and toiletries too.

The Parsnipship

This stall pops up at Riverside and Roath Market most weeks, as well as at lots of other events in and around Cardiff, which is great because it means that we get lots of lovely produce! They hand-make pies, bombs (big spheres of vegetarian goodness), pakoras and other finger food, along with soup and salads.

Clancys

If you’re after quick food with a difference, go to Clancy’s in the middle of Cardiff Market. It’s a veggie and vegan stand that sells lunches (wraps, pies, dhal, falafel), indulgent raw chocolate creations and cakes. You can also buy food to cook later (such as roasts and sausages) plus loads of herbs and spices.

Milgi

One of the only places of its kind in Roath, this cafe bar serves 100% veggie food all day, with irresistible cocktails to boot. They make an effort to add excitement to dishes, so put twists on traditional foods from around the world. Typical menu items include Moroccan sharing boards, beanburgers with international flair and spiced doughnuts with dipping sauces.

Largely vegetarian and vegan

Canteen

For a three course meal built from a regularly changing menu, try Canteen. Its relaxed environment is no reflection to their attention to detail with their food, for every dish is flavourful, inventive and inspiring. While mostly veggie, there are always vegan choices and a slow-cooked meat dish too.

This mini-chain of tearooms sells some of the best cakes in town, many of which are dairy free. As well as a wall of teas and stacks of cakes, they serve substantial cafe lunches that look and taste brilliant, from seasonal soups to artisan bread open sandwiches. Top tip: the courgette and lime cake is insanely good.

Though not exclusively vegetarian, Middle Eastern restaurant Mina has a massive amount of choice for veggies and vegans. Their cold and hot mezze items are perfect for sharing, accompanied with Arabic flatbread and fragrant tagines.
