Dan Cater explores the best spots to grab a cone and cool off in the capital.
Haagen Dazs Shop
When it comes to choice Haagen Dazs leave no cone unturned. Allied to a dazzling array of flavours – including green tea & hibiscus this summer – is an inventive menu which makes the most of an assortment of crepes, waffles, syrups and sauces. The result is an indulgent selection without parallel from fondue to caramel crunch but if there is one standout performer it has to be the Belgian chocolate sauce which solidifies into a cracking shield of milky cocoa heaven.

A creation of Jacob Kenedy (whose Bocca di Lupo restaurant was twice crowned London’s best), Gelupo combines traditional Italian with local English produce, with an ever evolving menu of Gelatti to challenge your taste buds. Ingenuity is at the heart of Amorino, whose individuality is encapsulated in its flowery offerings. Rather than scoop your ice, individual segments are arranged like petals. But if you think this is style without the substance think again. This technique enables you to sample numerous flavours, even when purchasing the small option (although who does that?). Alongside these masterpieces are a selection of chocolates, drinks, crepes and ice cream macarons, just in case you weren’t totally satiated.

If Amorino is invention in the artistic sense, Chin Chin Labs takes it to a scientific level. Freezing your order by way of liquid nitrogen might not seem appealing but there is a reason the gelateria has developed queues outside its doors. Preferring to place quality over quantity the menu changes on a daily basis but remains short and sweet. Todays flavours: Pondicherry vanilla; valrhona chocolate; peach, blue cheese and nuts; scones, jam and tea.

Positioning itself as natural luxury ice cream Scoop promises vibrant flavours, beautifully displayed and concocted using high quality ingredients. But it is their Gelato cakes, stunningly decorated with iced fruits, which make Scoop such a unique option. Allied to these are an assortment of authentic, Italian pasticceria – homemade pastries such as bombolini and cannoncini.
