Edinburgh Festival Fringe theatre review: Threesome, reviewed by The Scotsman’s Billy Barrett.

★★★

This laddish comedy starring April Pearson – best known for playing Michelle in the first season of the E4 teen drama Skins – has a brilliantly British awkwardness in its riff on bourgeois sexual mores. A mid-thirties couple go home with a young woman (Pearson) in the hope of spicing up their stale marriage with a no-strings three-way, only to find they’re not quite as liberal as they drunkenly thought.

The actors’ snappy comic timing and evident chemistry makes this an enjoyable romp, as we sit through the ill-advised rendezvous in painful real-time.

Writer Jamie Patterson has the trio catalogue their coital dos and don’ts (crisp packet and rubber band as a condom is a definite no-no), as relations quickly sour and the evening’s planned activities begin to look increasingly, farcically unlikely.

Some of Patterson’s characterisation is a little regressive – Gemma Rook plays the older, prudish buzzkill to Pearson’s youthful, sex-loving libertine (who says things like “I don’t need to be clever – I’m pretty”) and the whole set-up feels a lot like hetero male wish-fulfilment.

But Threesome doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s a likeable enough risqué rom-com if you’re after a bit of safely sordid evening humour.
