Whether a weekday necessity because you missed breakfast, or a relaxed weekend treat with friends, nothing beats a laid-back brunch – and nobody does it better than the Americans.

Luckily you can find a taste of Manhattan in Manchester, with our pick of the best places to do brunch US style.

The Pen and Pencil

Named after the famous New York steakhouse where Don Draper hangs out, this Mad Men-inspired bar and restaurant in the Northern Quarter offers a Manhattan style menu and decor. Brunch options include American pancakes with streaky bacon and maple syrup, corned beef hash New York style with two eggs over-easy, and a full American breakfast – two eggs any style, three rashers of streaky bacon, sausage patty, hash brown, BBQ beans, and American pancake.

Classic US style sandwich options include a Reuben, grilled cheese, Monte Cristo, and the famous Philly cheese steak, all served with home fries and slaw. Wash it all down with coffee, US beer or a cocktail list that includes homemade pecan pie liqueur as an ingredient.

Home Sweet Home

As well as a range of Bennies, breakfast waffles and house hash on the breakfast menu, Home Sweet Home – newly opened in the Great Northern – offers pancakes served all day with whipped cinnamon butter and a range of toppings.

If you’re really hungry, check out the crispy fluffy homemade waffles topped with fried chicken, crispy bacon and spiced maple butter – or the amazing cheeseburger toastie.

A 5 dollar shake contains peanut butter, salted caramel and homemade pretzel brittle, or try one of the decadent Cakeshakes – Turner and Smooch contains cinnamon donuts, salted toffee, espresso, and Hersheys chocolate sauce.

Offering US diner-style classics, brunch at the super cool Common includes hanger steak with hash browns, fried eggs and toast, or salt beef hash with fried potatoes, gherkins and fried eggs.

There’s a range of sandwiches served with fries, or burgers include the Reuben – with emmental, salt beef and sauerkraut pickle, or the maple bacon burger with smoked cheddar and chipotle.

Wash it down with a single origin filter coffee, a US style pale ale, or a craft soda. Don’t miss the donuts, freshly made at their in-house bakery – they’re seriously good.

Available at the weekends, Solita do a stunning steak and eggs benedict for brunch, alongside salt beef melt on a pretzel bun, or a salt beef bagel.

We love the house waffles with buttermilk fried chicken and a completely addictive US-style sausage gravy.

If you’re craving a burger, try the brunch burger – 6oz beef patty, melted Monterey jack, streaky bacon and griddle fried egg.

Moose provide an American diner influenced breakfast and brunch experience with an authentic short order menu and premium espresso based coffee, bringing a US experience to the best meal of the day.

Try their New York Moose, better known as the eggs benedict, or The Mighty Moose – homemade potato hash, organic bacon and free range eggs.

The Bronx Brunch consists of griddled potato hash with smoked sausage, streaky bacon, corned beef, melted cheese and two eggs over-easy.
