Absolutely Fabulous movie: everything we know
Absolutely Fabulous

When it was confirmed way back in May 2014 that the Absolutely Fabulous film was definitely in the works, people were equally excited and apprehensive about the big screen debut of Patsy Stone and Edina Monsoon.

Whatever your opinions on big screen adaptations of classic contemporary sitcoms though, news fell pretty silent after that – aside from a few on-set photos of Kate Moss chain-smoking her way out of some kind of lake – and a few hushed whispers fell into quiet disbelief that it would actually happen

But the first teaser trailer for the film has just landed, and with it, a wealth of new information to quench your thirst and quell your nerves.

Here’s everything we currently know about Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie:

Everyone’s back on board

It’s not just Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley reprising their roles – seemingly anyone who ever stepped foot on the Ab Fab set is back for the big screen ride.

Fellow original cast members Julia Sawalha (Saffy), Jane Horrocks (Bubble) and June Whitfield (Mother) return for the film, as well as Kathy Burke, Celia Imrie, Helen Lederer and Harriet Thorpe reprising their guest roles from the original series.

It seems everyone wants in on the big screen action, and while most of those will probably just be brief scenes (unless the film’s going for a 3 hour + running time, which we highly doubt), it’s nice to see this level of continuity as the sitcom makes its way to cinemas.

It’ll feature cameos galore

What self-respecting comedy movie doesn’t come with a glut of high-profile celebrity cameos these days?

While the practice is especially common in TV-to-film adaptations as a kind of thin veneer over what is otherwise a laughably unfunny film (a distraction technique from the naffness), we’re going to give Absolutely Fabulous the benefit of the doubt.

With the sitcom’s central characters being a PR agent on the desperate hunt for the latest trends and a magazine editor, we’re fairly confident that Ab Fab‘s cameos will at least tie in to the over-arching plot somewhat, and won’t just be tacked on for a cheap laugh.

Whichever way it goes, those confirmed to appear so far include: Kate Moss, Rebel Wilson, Harry Styles, Lulu, Emma Bunton, Joan Collins and Cara Delevingne.

The parody is (still) strong

The original TV run of Ab Fab lampooned out-of-touch media types and managed to remain sharply relevant through a rapidly changing cultural landscape until its eventual end in 2012.

It seems Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley have lost none of their scalpel sharp wit, as the initial teaser brilliantly sends up classic ads for Martini and Barcadi, complete with soft focus shots of glasses clinking, and the breathy refrains of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus’.

It’s caused some controversy already

As WOW previously reported back in December, Ab Fab‘s production threw up some controversy when Jeanette Tough, best know for her portrayal of Wee Jimmy Krankie, was seen sporting a short black wig and sunglasses having been cast as a Japanese fashion designer called Huki Muki.

It didn’t sit well with Korean-American comedian Margaret Cho, who took to Twitter to vent her outrage at a film she was otherwise looking forward to catching.

It’ll be taking in some fabulous locations

Plot details seem to be fairly thing on the ground at the time of writing, but we’ll be leaving London behind for the glamourous climbs of the French Riviera by the looks of things.

The film reportedly starts with Edina and Patsy shopping, drinking and clubbing their way (the usual then) around London’s top spots until they become blamed for a ‘major incident’ at a fashionable launch party. To flee the media horror-show that follows the pair get to France, and soon hatch a plan to stay there for good.

If we were writing a script for our big screen debut, we’d make sure it took in some nice locations too.

It’s out in time for summer, darling

June 1 to be precise.

We’re hoping some seasonally hot weather will make us actually feel like we’re right there on the French Riviera, and make those endless glasses of cool champagne all the more refreshing.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is scheduled for release on June 1.
