Step into Jags@119, and you’ll spot a Cadillac on the ceiling, ‘Old Glory’ flags hanging from the ceiling, and a homage to just about every American idol you can think on the walls. All the burgers (£9) are named after locations – the Arizona (beef chilli and cheese), the Louisiana (BBQ pulled pork and cheese), and the delicious Daytona (mushroom, bacon and blue cheese) – and even the main man Elvis has a special Presley burger (peanut butter, pineapple and cheese) named after him. For your patty, choose between Juicy Lucy, Beef Patty, Fried Chicken, or the veggie-friendly Mushroom & Halloumi.

At 6oz Burgers, you can choose any burger – classic cheese, chilli, chicken, house or veggie – along either skinny fries, sweet potato chips, courgette chips, coleslaw or seasonal salad, all for £9.75. At the moment, 6oz Burger is also serving up Seasonal Burger Specials, including the Sirloin Steak Burger, which is the 6oz hand formed patty topped with Minute Sirloin Steak and cheese, served with lettuce, sweet pickle and sauce in a steamed Brioche bun (£13.50, including any side).

Shorties is a friendly, comfortable restaurant near Clarence Pier. It serves a particularly tasty Chargrilled chicken breast burger (£8.95), which comes served with a salad garnish, a toasted sesame bun, french fries, relish, and salad. The restaurant also have traditional American burgers on offer – choose between the 4oz (£6.95) or if you’re feeling more hardy, have a go at the 8oz (£8.40).

Uncle Sam’s Hamburger Express
Cheap and cheerful, grab yourself a tasty burger at a decent price at Uncle Sam’s Hamburger Express on London Road. They’ve got a great selection – chilliburger, garlic burger, 100 Island burger, Allstar burger, Hawaiian burger, Texas burger, Bluecheese burger, Bacon cheeseburger, the double chilli’n’cheese, and Uncle Sam’s Biggest Burger. There’s something on the menu for vegetarians as well, as Uncle Sam’s offers a veggie burger, spicy beanburger, and the veggie deluxe. All the burgers are cooked fresh.

Right on the seafront, this bar and grill offers a cracking selection for burgers. We recommend the Scooby Doo burger (£12.95) – two chargrilled homemade 100 per cent beef patties, served with lettuce, tomato, mayo, tomato relish, cheese and onion rings, along with coleslaw and Joes fries. If you’re more into chicken burgers, give the Chicken Doodle Do burger (£12.95) a whirl – two chargrilled chicken breast, served with lettuce, onion, tomato, onion rings, mayo, tomato relish, coleslaw and Joes fries. Add bacon, pickles, or extra cheese to your burger for a quid.

Southsea Beach Café
Southsea Beach Café do a delicious veggie burger (£7.50) that’s a little different from your usual veggie patty – the dish includes a stuffed mushroom burger with beer battered onion rings, sauerkraut, chilli mayo, parmesan, cheddar and rocket served in an all butter brioche bun with paprika skin on fries and SBC slaw. If you’re after something more traditional, try the SBC burger (£7.90) – locally made 6oz steak patty, crisp gem lettuce pickles, tomato, and burger sauce, all served in an all butter brioche bun, along with paprika skin on fried and SBC slaw.

Mick’s Monster Burgers
A local favourite, head up the hill to Mick’s Monster Burgers, grab yourself one of the huge servings the team dish out and enjoy the view over Portsmouth. Definitely a place to go if you’re looking for a huge variety of burgers, including beef burgers, egg burgers, chilli relish burgers, mushroom burgers and cheese and bacon burgers. Mick’s also has ‘speciality’ burgers if you’re after something super filling – the Micks Grill, the Animal, the Blowout, the Jawbreaker, the Brunch Bun, the Jawbreaker Special and the Gutbuster – so proceed at your peril!

Struggling to find a vegan-friendly burger in Southsea? If you’re on the lookout for a tasty vegan patty, then head to Smile Café, a family run, traditional English café located on Marmion Road. Choose from either a traditional veggie burger or a spicy veggie burger, which the Smile Café team will serve up with a salad garnish in a toasted bun with chunky chips, a healthy salad, or a bit of both for £5.90.
