A big slice of blockbuster news just landed on Twitter, which has got people very excited indeed.

Stephen King confirmed that the adaptation of his The Dark Tower series will be going ahead, and that it will star Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba in the leading roles.

If you’re wondering what the big hoo-ha is about, The Dark Tower is considered by many to be the author’s finest work – a collection of eight fantasy books spanning over 4,000 pages which tell the story of ‘gunslinger’ Roland Deschain on a metaphysical journey towards a tower, switching between realities.

Idris Elba will be taking on the role of the mystical gunslinger, whilst Matthew McConaughey will be playing the ever-present antagonist ‘The Man In Black’.

The Dark Tower is a genre-spanning work, incorporating elements of Western, fantasy, horror and science fiction. There have been various attempts to put together a film adaptation with J.J. Abrams, Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem all being linked at various points.

The project by Sony Pictures will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel of lauded Danish drama movie A Royal Affair.

Details are thin on the ground, with little known as to which section of the 4,000 page series the first movie will focus on.

But people are understandably excited, especially when Idris Elba is doing creepy stuff like this:

Twitter responded with palpable enthusiasm:
