Did you know the author of Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame, was born in Edinburgh? Luckily, new bar Badger & Co is about to make that a well known fact.

Inspired by the creatures of the riverbank, the Badger & Co team have transformed Grahame’s birthplace at 32 Castle Street into a charming bar and eatery serving up craft drinks and a seasonal menu.

Keeping the beautiful period features of the original property, the design of Badger & Co also mixes in contemporary details inspired by bars in New York and London.

The casual feel of the bar makes it the perfect place for all kinds of people, so you can visit with your friends for pre-night out drinks but also feel equally at home there with mum and dad for Sunday lunch.

“We’re a bar and eatery, absolutely not a restaurant at all – that’s not what we’re about. We’re not about white tablecloths and all that, it’s casual, all-day dining that we love. The menu is really, really interesting. We’re focusing heavily on wonderful, interesting pies and the rest of the menu is quite varied, bistro style and very much seasonal.”

Badger & Co are committed to providing delicious food with great provenance, sourced locally from local producers.

They also keep waste to a minimum and use as much of the ingredients as possible, creating “nose to tail” dishes which are sustainable as well as tasty. We can’t wait to try the whole roast suckling pig!

Creating the wine list has been a labour of love for the Badger & Co team and it features carefully hand-picked wines from across the world.

The cocktail list harks back to classic cocktails of days gone by, with great ingredients and simple cocktails made really well. There’s plenty of choice for craft beer lovers too with unique brews from as far afield as Hawaii and New Zealand.

“It’s always the right time to call into Badger & Co. Early or late, we’re always good tempered, always pleased to see you, and always sorry to see you go.”

Open from breakfast until late at night, Badger & Co is sure to become a favourite haunt for Edinburgh locals looking for something a little bit different.

The building itself is full of nooks and crannies with surprises along the way, and the sunken garden out the back is home to a rather lovely Wind in the Willows inspired mural by local artist Chris Rutterford.

“It’s all about getting to know and like our regulars. We’re right in the heart of Edinburgh, just off George Street, and there’s something very charming about being just off George Street. It’s just like how the most successful plays are just off Broadway.”

Badger & Co is now open – 32 Castle St, EH2 3HT, find out more on the website
